Is Gemini accurate?

Our verdictMixed

Gemini had the most problems of four assistants in the EBU/BBC news study, yet the second lowest false-claim rate in NewsGuard's audit, so its accuracy depends on the task.

Short answer

Gemini is accurate on many facts but weak on sourcing news. In the EBU/BBC study, 76% of its news answers had a significant issue, the worst of four. Yet NewsGuard found it repeated false claims only 16.67% of the time. Check its sources every time.

What these results mean

Gemini's record splits by task. The EBU/BBC study judged news answers from the free consumer app, and Gemini did badly there. Its problems were mostly about sourcing: 72% of its responses had sourcing issues, and the overall significant-issue rate of 76% was about double the next assistant (EBU and BBC, 2025-10-21).

NewsGuard measured something else: whether a chatbot repeats a known false story. Gemini did well, with the second lowest rate of 10 chatbots, behind Claude (NewsGuard, 2025-09-04).

The model benchmarks point the same way as NewsGuard. Gemini 4 Argon (High), one of the models behind Gemini, had the lowest hallucination rate on the live AA-Omniscience leaderboard at 4% when checked on 2026-10-29. Hallucination there means a wrong answer where the model should have declined.

Gemini is good at avoiding known falsehoods and poor at showing where its news facts came from.

Where Gemini goes wrong

  • Sourcing news

Most of Gemini's EBU/BBC failures came from missing, wrong or unsupported sources. A correct-sounding answer can rest on a source that does not say it.

  • Direct quotes

20% of Gemini responses that quoted someone had significant quote problems, against an all-assistant average of 12% (EBU and BBC). That was the highest quote problem rate of the four assistants.

  • Newer is not always better

On the Vectara leaderboard, Gemini 3.1 Pro preview added unsupported content to 10.4% of summaries and Gemini 3 Pro preview to 13.6%, both worse than Gemini 2.5 Pro at 7.0%.

  • Not every Gemini model scores the same

On AA-Omniscience, Gemini 4 Carbon (High) had an 11% hallucination rate, against 4% for Gemini 4 Argon (High). Which model answers you matters.

The pattern matters for how you use it. Gemini is less likely than most chatbots to repeat a known false story, but more likely to attach a news fact to the wrong source or a garbled quote. Gemini also powers Google's search summaries. That product has its own record, covered on are Google AI Overviews accurate.

How to check Gemini's answers

  1. Open the sources Gemini shows

Confirm each page exists and says what Gemini claims. This is where Gemini failed most in the EBU/BBC study.

  2. Check every quote word for word

Search the exact quote in the original article or transcript. Gemini had the highest quote problem rate of the four assistants.

  3. Ask Gemini where each fact came from

If it cannot point to a page you can open, treat the fact as unconfirmed until you find a source yourself.

  4. Note which model answered

Gemini models differ by several points on the same test. Results for one do not carry over to another.

  5. Confirm dates and numbers in the original document

News facts change quickly and summaries drift.

The full five-step routine is on how to fact-check an AI answer. How each source is weighed is on how we score AI accuracy.

Questions

Is Gemini always right?

No. Gemini is right on many facts but has clear weak spots. In the EBU/BBC report of 2025-10-21, 76% of its news answers had at least one significant issue, mostly sourcing problems. It was much better at avoiding known false stories, with a 16.67% repeat rate in NewsGuard's August 2025 audit. Check its sources before trusting any news answer.

Is Gemini reliable for research?

Gemini is useful for finding leads, less so for citing them. Its newest models score well on hard factual questions: Gemini 4 Argon (High) had a 4% hallucination rate on AA-Omniscience, checked on 2026-10-29. But in the EBU/BBC news study its sourcing was the weakest of four assistants. Use it to explore, then cite the originals you have read.

Does Gemini make up sources?

Gemini often gets sources wrong. In the EBU/BBC study, sourcing issues affected 72% of Gemini's news responses, and 20% of its responses with direct quotes had significant quote problems. That does not mean every source is invented, but it does mean every link and quote needs opening and reading before you use it.

Is the paid version of Gemini more accurate?

Not by default. Different Gemini models score differently: on AA-Omniscience, Gemini 4 Argon (High) had a 4% hallucination rate and Gemini 4 Carbon (High) 11%, checked on 2026-10-29. A paid plan may give you a stronger model, but the Tow Center found premium AI search tiers gave more confidently wrong answers than free ones.

How do I check a Gemini answer?

Open every source Gemini shows and confirm it says the same thing. Search any direct quote word for word in the original. Check dates and figures against the primary document. Note which Gemini model answered, since models differ. If a claim has no source you can open, treat it as unconfirmed until you find one yourself.
